GATE 2027 Eligibility, Explained with Official Links

GATE's eligibility rules are broad. This post sets out only what the GATE 2027 information brochure from IIT Madras states (section 6.1 and Table 2), applies it to common cases, and points you to the brochure or the GATE helpdesk for anything less straightforward. The brochure and the official eligibility page are linked below, and they decide.

What the brochure says

  • A candidate currently in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme, or who has completed any government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities, is eligible
  • A candidate pursuing, or holding, a degree higher than those in the brochure's Table 2 is eligible
  • There is no age limit
  • Table 2 sets out the rule degree by degree. For example: B.E., B.Tech. and B.Pharm. from the third year; three-year B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. and BCA from the third year; M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.V.Sc. and the other listed medical degrees from the fifth semester; M.Sc., M.A. and M.C.A. from the first year; and B.Sc. (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry) from the third year

Not sure? Ask the official source

If your degree, institution or situation isn't one of the clear-cut rows above, don't rely on a summary, this one included. Read section 6.1 and Table 2 of the GATE 2027 information brochure, or contact the GATE 2027 helpdesk at IIT Madras: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, phone 044-22578200 (as listed in the brochure).

Eligibility is not admission

In the brochure's words, qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job: admission to any institute and recruitment by any employer depend entirely on that institute's or employer's own criteria. Read the notice of every programme you're aiming for, not just the GATE rules.

Choosing a paper

GATE 2027 has 30 test papers. You can appear in one, or in two, as long as the pair is on the brochure's list of allowed two-paper combinations (Table 4, also on the official site).

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a second-year B.Tech student can apply early. The rule starts at the third year
  • Assuming GATE has an age limit. It doesn't
  • Treating eligibility for GATE as eligibility for a programme. The admitting institute decides
  • Relying on a summary for an unusual degree. Check the brochure's Table 2 or ask the helpdesk
