How the GATE Application Process Works: Documents to Exam Day

This is a guide to the process around a GATE 2027 application, based on section 6 of the GATE 2027 information brochure from IIT Madras: what the portal does, what to have ready, what happens after you submit, and what to bring on exam day. It isn't a reminder to apply. Registration dates have been revised more than once, and fee amounts and timing are best read straight from the official pages, linked here first.

The application portal

Applications are submitted online only, through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS), accessible from the GATE 2027 website. Documents are uploaded online too: the brochure asks candidates not to send printed forms or documents to IIT Madras or any GATE office. GOAPS lets you save a partly filled form and come back to it later.

What GOAPS is used for

  • Registering and enrolling for the exam
  • Uploading your photograph, signature, photo ID and any category, PwD or dyslexia certificate
  • Paying the application fee
  • Checking the status of your application, including any defect and its rectification
  • Later: downloading your admit card, viewing your answers, marks and GATE score, and downloading your scorecard

Registration

  • Indian nationals may need to register through DigiLocker. Other nationals register with their full name (as on their valid photo ID), an email address, a mobile number and a password
  • The brochure recommends a verified DigiLocker account. With an unverified one, GATE may ask for more documents during scrutiny, and the originals must be produced at the exam venue
  • Only one person can register with one email address, and the email and mobile number can't be changed later, so use your own
  • Each candidate gets a unique Enrolment ID by email. You'll need it in all later communication
  • Your live photo is captured during registration, so use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a 5 MP camera

Have these ready before you fill the form

  • Personal details, with your name exactly as on your photo ID (no prefixes such as Mr., Dr. or Prof.) and a date of birth that matches it
  • Address for communication with PIN code, degree details, and your institute's name and address with PIN code
  • Your choice of test paper or papers, and three exam city choices
  • A recent photograph (not older than 3 months) and your signature, in the brochure's specified format
  • A scanned photo ID, plus your SC/ST certificate, UDID or PwD certificate, or dyslexia certificate if they apply (PDF)
  • Internet banking, debit card, credit card, UPI or wallet details for the fee

Photo IDs the brochure accepts

Aadhaar-UID, Aadhaar Virtual ID, passport, PAN card, voter ID card, driving licence, or any valid photo ID issued by the central or a state government. Upload the one issued most recently, and bring the same original to the exam: without it, you may not be allowed to sit the paper.

Worked example: a pre-submission check

  • Name: the form says "Dr. Priya Sharma" but her Aadhaar says "Priya Sharma". Remove the prefix: the name must match the photo ID exactly, and the scorecard is issued in the name on the form
  • Date of birth: check it digit for digit against the same ID
  • Exam cities: if her first choice is in one GATE zone, the second and third must be in that same zone. GATE may still allot a different city for operational reasons
  • Photo ID: she uploads the most recently issued ID and puts the original with her exam-day documents
  • Review: she clicks "Save and View Application" and reads everything, because after "Submit and Proceed to Payment" the form can't be changed

Paying the fee

The fee is paid online by internet banking, debit card, credit card, wallet or UPI; the brochure advises enabling e-commerce transactions on your card first. Bank charges aren't included. The fee isn't transferable and isn't refundable, except when a certain two-paper combination is removed. For the amount that applies to you, use the official fees page linked above.

If something needs correcting

Your application status in GOAPS can show a defect and, later, the status after rectification. The two official pages that mention the rectification window give different dates, so check the Important Dates page and the fees page rather than relying on either date alone.

On exam day

  • Arrive by the reporting time on your admit card. Requests to change the centre, date or time aren't entertained
  • Bring the original of the photo ID you uploaded, and the original documents if you registered with an unverified DigiLocker account
  • The paper is a 3-hour computer-based test in English, with only an on-screen virtual calculator

Common mistakes

  • Planning around a registration date read anywhere other than the official Important Dates page
  • Using a parent's email address or mobile number. They can't be changed later
  • A name or date of birth that doesn't match the photo ID exactly
  • Uploading one photo ID and bringing a different one on exam day

Sources and last verified date

The application steps in this post come from section 6 of the GATE 2027 information brochure (IIT Madras, dated 27 September 2026); the dates come from the official Important Dates page. Both were checked on 7 October 2026. If the brochure is revised, it takes precedence.
