GATE CS Preparation: A Subject-by-Subject Study Order
The GATE CS 2027 syllabus has ten sections, and several of them lean on each other. Studying them in an order that respects those links saves you from learning the same idea twice. This order is built from the official 2027 CS syllabus text, not from any guess about which sections carry more marks: GATE doesn't publish that split.
The marks you can count on
GATE CS is 100 marks: General Aptitude 15, Engineering Mathematics 13, and 72 for the other nine sections. General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics together are 28 marks, so they deserve steady time from the first week, not a cram at the end.
The order, and why
| Phase | Sections | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Discrete Mathematics (from Engineering Mathematics); Programming and Data Structures | Recurrence relations and graphs feed Algorithms, and logic and sets feed Theory of Computation. Data structures are what algorithms run on |
| 2 | Algorithms; Digital Logic | Algorithms builds on data structures and recurrences. Digital Logic stands alone and is needed for the next phase |
| 3 | Computer Organization and Architecture; Theory of Computation | ALU and control unit design build on combinational and sequential circuits. TOC builds on logic and sets |
| 4 | Operating System; Compiler Design | Virtual memory and I/O scheduling build on the memory hierarchy, interrupts and DMA. Lexical analysis and parsing build on finite automata and context-free grammars |
| 5 | Databases; Computer Networks | Indexing with B and B+ trees uses trees from data structures, and concurrency control echoes OS synchronization. Networks is the most self-contained section |
| 6 | Linear Algebra, Calculus, Probability and Statistics | The rest of Engineering Mathematics, which no later section depends on, so it can sit late or run alongside |
Worked example: a 17-week plan
From 7 October 2026 there are 17 weeks and 3 days to Saturday 6 February 2027. One way to spend them: phases 1 to 6 take two weeks each, except phase 1 which takes three, so the syllabus is covered by the end of week 13. Weeks 14 to 17 are for revision and full-length 3-hour papers. General Aptitude gets two short sessions every week throughout, because its four sections (verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial) reward regular practice more than a late cram.
| Weeks | Work |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Discrete Mathematics; Programming and Data Structures |
| 4 to 5 | Algorithms; Digital Logic |
| 6 to 7 | Computer Organization and Architecture; Theory of Computation |
| 8 to 9 | Operating System; Compiler Design |
| 10 to 11 | Databases; Computer Networks |
| 12 to 13 | Linear Algebra, Calculus, Probability and Statistics; catch-up |
| 14 to 17 | Revision, previous papers and full-length timed papers |
Stay on the 2027 syllabus
- Computer Networks lists IPv4 (fragmentation, CIDR notation, network address translation) and TCP flow and congestion control, plus DNS and HTTP. IPv6 isn't listed
- Programming and Data Structures lists trees, binary search trees and binary heaps. B and B+ trees appear under Databases, as indexing
- Compiler Design includes runtime environments, intermediate code generation and data flow analyses such as liveness analysis
- Operating System includes system calls, inter-process communication and CPU and I/O scheduling
Common mistakes
- Starting with Compiler Design or Operating System before the sections they build on
- Leaving all of Engineering Mathematics to the end. Discrete Mathematics is needed early
- Studying topics from an old syllabus that the 2027 PDF doesn't list
- Skipping full-length practice. Every paper is 3 hours, and stamina is part of the test
